Open,
Private, and Cubicle Work Space Arrangements
Work space can be arranged
in many different ways. At one extreme, each
employee has a private office; at the other
extreme, everyone works together in one large
room. Office space arrangements vary according
to function, managerial style, financial
resources, and company culture.
In the open plan, several to hundreds of people
work together in the same space. Some studies
show that this arrangement stimulates short-term
productivity among employees working on a
specific project, such as software development.
The open arrangement facilitates teamwork and
the sharing of ideas. However, the lack of
privacy tends to increase the incidence of theft
and the loss of company secrets.
Few companies are able to provide private
offices for all of their employees. The private
office offers the ultimate in security and
individual control of the work space, but there
are drawbacks, too. While a private office is a
great aid to concentration, it can also be
isolating. An employee with a private office may
need to make an extra effort to be visible, stay
in the loop, be informed, and maintain good
relations with coworkers.
